1. Overview of the Book and Author
Author: Abu Muhammad Abdullah ibn Muslim ibn Qutayba al-Dinawari (Died: 276 AH).
Subject: Sciences of the Arabic language (syntax, morphology, orthography, semantics) and the general culture of the writer.
Status: It is considered one of the "Four Pillars" upon which Arabic literature is built (alongside "Al-Kamil" by Al-Mubarrad, "Al-Bayan wa al-Tabyin" by Al-Jahiz, and "Al-Amali" by Al-Qali), as described by Ibn Khaldun in his Muqaddimah.
Ibn Qutayba noticed a weakness in the language of the "kufah" (scribes/officials in state bureaus) of his time and the prevalence of "lahn" (linguistic errors) in their speech and official correspondence. Therefore, he authored this book to serve as a linguistic constitution to which a writer could refer to correct his tongue and hand, avoid common mistakes, and acquire a solid linguistic culture.
Ibn Qutayba divided his book into a long and important introduction, followed by four main sections (books):
First: The Book of Knowledge (Kitab al-Ma'rifah)
This is the largest section of the book.
It concerns philology and the meanings of vocabulary.
It reviews terminology needed by a writer in various fields (the sky and stars, horses, camels, plants, weapons, human attributes, etc.) so that the writer is well-versed in the correct names of things.
Second: The Book of Rectifying the Hand (Taqwim al-Yad)
This section is dedicated to the rules of Orthography and Script.
It addresses how to draw words, write hamzas (glottal stops), elongation and shortening, and connecting and separating letters, ensuring the writer's script is free from spelling defects.
Third: The Book of Rectifying the Tongue (Taqwim al-Lisan)
This section focuses on linguistic and phonetic correction (Syntax and Language).
It highlights common errors found in the speech of both the common people and the elite, clarifying the correct vs. incorrect pronunciation and usage of words (what takes a hamza and what doesn't, masculine vs. feminine usage, plurals and duals).
Fourth: The Book of Structures (Kitab al-Abniyah)
This section is dedicated to the science of Morphology (Sarf).
It deals with the meters (patterns) of verbs and nouns, their conjugations, derivations, and verbal nouns (masdars).
Reference: It is considered an essential reference for anyone wishing to master classical Arabic (Fusha).
Methodology: It is distinguished by a clear educational style, where Ibn Qutayba cites evidence (Shawahid) from the Holy Quran, the Noble Hadith, and ancient Arabic poetry to authenticate his rules.
Impact: For centuries, this book remained the primary source for teaching writing and composition in the Arab heritage.
